Derek brings years of personal running and coaching experience to the table. He ran at a high level through the 2012 Olympic T&F Trials, and got to train and learn under well respected coaches such as Robert Chapman (Director of Sport Science and Medicine at USATF) and Brad Hudson (author of Run Faster). He also coached at various high schools and was head distance coach at Liberty University before moving to Portland. While coaching isn’t his full-time job anymore, he loves to coach a variety of athletes on the side. He especially enjoys coaching collegiate and elite/sub-elite level, but coaches those of all abilities. His coaching style is more of a guidance style, to work around your work and life schedule, and to empower the runner to make his own decisions as well.

I started running with Team Athena about eight years ago when I moved to the Portland area. I was tired of running alone and wanted to find women to run with. Team Athena offers track workouts for female members on Tuesday nights, and it’s been so fun to find workout partners. A group of us often meet on Thursdays and Saturdays for runs as well. I’ve made some of my best friends in Portland through Team Athena and absolutely love it!

I’ve been working with Chris for six months. He was great at evaluating my previous training plans and analyzing where he thought its strengths and weaknesses were. He found areas of opportunity in my training and made adjustments which I believe resulted in my four minute pr in the half marathon. Chris is a very positive, encouraging and motivating coach. He’s a good and frequent communicator. I fully trust Chris’s experience and wisdom and will continue working with him and look forward to doing so.
